Oakland, CA 9:00 am - 12:30 pm | Parenting Strategies for Adoptive Families: Parenting an adopted child is both the "same as" and incredibly "different than" parenting a child born to you. We will focus on practical strategies for issues like celebrating birthdays, planning vacations, changing schools, moving, divorce, graduation, rites of passage, holidays, adding or losing family members, and other normal life events that have special resonance for adoptive families. We will also address specific parenting theories and their usefulness and applicability to adoptive family life. Audience participation will be encouraged with an emphasis on exploring specific family concerns. |

Here's a chance to have a good time with other kids who are like you. There will be teen / tween only activities. Parents can participate in a concurrent peer support group during which childcare will be available for younger siblings. Separate groups for teens and pre-teens. |

Oakland, CA 9:00 am - 3:30 pm | True Colors II Interrogating our own Racism: Pushing past Racism 101 True Colors II will feature advanced conversations about race that begin with a foundation that already acknowledges racism exists and has a direct impact on my child's life as well as my own. You must have attended Pact's True Colors I (or demonstrate other substantive education on transracial adoption) to participate in this workshop. We will highlight hands on internal work with other parents to collaborate and develop parenting strategies. |

Oakland, CA 9:30 am - 4:00 pm | True Colors I is a workshop for transracial and interracial families that focuses on the issues inherent to parenting children across racial lines. We will present concrete suggestions for connecting your child to his or her racial heritage and information about how positive racial identity develops. This workshop is required for Pact clients currently waiting to adopt across racial lines as well as parents who are experiencing new challenges as they and their children enter new ages and stages of the journey. Real life scenarios will be explored in an interactive approach to problem solving and understanding the obvious and sometimes not so obvious divides and boundaries that multiracial families. |

Oakland, CA 9:30 am - 4:00 pm | Baby Care for Adopted Infants Finally - - a baby care class designed especially for pre-adoptive parents! You will learn the fundamentals of baby care and won't have to sit through topics that don't necessarily apply to your family (such as post-partum care or the assumption that your child will be breast-fed). The class will teach you the basics of baby care as well as give you really practical information about how to promote attachment and read your new baby's cues. Featured speakers: Molly Branigan, certified infant care instructor, and Dr. Nancy Curtis of the International Adoption Clinic, Children's Hospital of Oakland. |
