an african american adopted child Children spend a large portion of their lives in school, with teachers and administrators who are usually well-intentioned but are not necessarily well educated or effective at serving either children of color and/or adopted/fostered children. Educators are not always informed about adoption, race, culture, and family diversity and how to create inclusive curriculum that acknowledges bias and supports difference. Parents often need assistance themselves in how to address issues of adoption and race within their family so that thinking about how to support and educate their children’s teachers becomes an additional burden. Articles include suggestions for teachers and parents about advocacy and curriculum, how to choose a school for your child, and the realities of how and why the school system underserves children of color. Pact offers in-service training for educators as well as a free copy of our publication for teachers and schools.

Pact offers programs and services that support adopted children of color and their families at every stage of the adoption journey, starting before birth and continuing through the school years and beyond. We offer pre-placement consultations and placement services for prospective parents who are looking to adopt a child of color as their first choice. We also offer support for adoptive parents who have already adopted (or are considering adopting) children of color through our online chat groups, our workshops and conferences, our nationally acclaimed Pact Family Camp, one-on-one consultations focused on the special issues inherent to adoptive parenting, and regional parent-organized affiliates in Northern California, Southern California, and throughout the U.S. Become a member of Pact to take advantage of all these resources and to receive our newsletter, Pact’s Point of View, which features many articles on the intersection of adoption, parenting, and race. Pact members receive a discount at our online bookstore, which features great reads on adoption carefully selected for both adults and kids of all ages. We also recommend blogs and other online resources that we believe have the very best advice and information for adoptive families of children of color about adoption, race, and parenting.
