An adoptive parent and his african american adopted infant Parenting as a single mother or father presents special challenges. It is common for children being raised by single parents to explore what makes family and how families are formed. This often includes conversations about where babies come from and what families look like, which can bring up some complex issues for families formed by adoption. For children being raised by single fathers, this line of questioning is amplified by their observation that in other families, mothers get pregnant as a precursor to babies being born and joining the family. Whether a single parent by choice or because of divorce or death, parents must manage parenting decisions and challenges alone and find support outside of their immediate family. Read articles about the experiences of single adoptive mothers and adoptive fathers as well as insights from children who have grown up in a single-parent home touched by adoption.

Pact offers services to support adopted children of color and their family at every stage of the adoption journey – this means creating an inclusive environment where single parents are supported and validated as neither better nor worse than two-parent families, just different. We offer pre-placement consultations and placement services for prospective parents who are looking to adopt a child of color as their first choice. We also offer support for adoptive parents who have already adopted (or are considering adopting) children of color through our online chat groups, including a special group for single parents, our educational workshops and conferences, our nationally acclaimed Pact Family Camp, one-on-one consultations focused on the special issues inherent to adoptive parenting, and regional parent-organized affiliates in Northern California, Southern California, and throughout the U.S. Become a member of Pact to take advantage of all these resources and to receive our newsletter, Pact’s Point of View, which features many personal stories and informational articles about adoption, parenting, and race. Pact members receive a discount at our online bookstore, which features great reads on adoption carefully selected for both adults and kids of all ages. We also recommend blogs and other online resources that we believe have the very best advice and information for adoptive families of children of color about adoption, race, and parenting.
