Two african american adopted children Special needs is a broad term with many meanings: legally each state defines special needs for the purpose of determining eligibility for Federal financial assistance for the adoption of children and youth from the US foster care system. In a broader context the term includes children who have mental and/or physical health issues, experiences of trauma, learning disabilities, and/or behavioral challenges. Parents who adopt children with known needs, or unanticipated ones, need tools and support to address their children’s issues and also manage the impact of these needs on everyone in the family. Read suggestions and stories from parents’ and children’s perspectives as well as professionals who work with children and families to create strategies that are effective and supportive.

Pact offers programs and services that support adopted children of color and their families at every stage of the adoption journey; many of the families we serve include children with special needs. We offer pre-placement consultations and placement services for prospective parents who are looking to adopt a child of color as their first choice. We also offer support for adoptive parents who have already adopted (or are considering adopting) children of color through our online chat groups, our workshops and conferences, our nationally acclaimed Pact Family Camp, one-on-one consultations focused on the special issues inherent to adoptive parenting, and regional parent-organized affiliates in Northern California, Southern California, and throughout the U.S. Become a member of Pact to take advantage of all these resources and to receive our newsletter, Pact’s Point of View, which features many personal stories and informational articles about adoption, parenting, and race. Pact members receive a discount at our online bookstore, which features great reads on adoption carefully selected for both adults and kids of all ages. We also recommend blogs and other online resources that we believe have the very best advice and information for adoptive families of children of color about adoption, race, and parenting.
