Pact, An Adoption Alliance Building Understanding Project Parameters

We are looking for families who are interested in participating in a special follow-up of the Building Understanding study called the "Adoptive and Birth Families Study." The purpose of this follow-up study is to learn more about families who adopt children of color from the public child welfare system and maintain a relationship with their child's birth family. Your involvement would include filling out the Building Understanding questionnaire and participating in a single interview in your home or another place that is more convenient for you.

Eligibility criteria are detailed below:

  • Transracial or same-race families
  • Children of African American or Latino background
  • Adoptive family living in the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento area, Southern California area, or San Diego area.
  • Adopted child currently under the age of 18
  • Child's adoptive placement before the age of 11 (finalization could have occurred later)
  • Ongoing contact with one of child's birth parents or relatives
  • Willingness of the birth parent or relative to participate in an interview in person or by telephone
  • Children between ages 10 and 18 to participate in an in-person interview (this is preferred but not required for eligibility)

If you would like to be involved, or find out more about the study, please click here to send us your contact information and a member of our research team will be in touch with you soon.

Thank you!
