What to Expect at the Hospital in Domestic Adoption

Being “pregnant by adoption” not addressed by most educators and professionals working with new parents. Even if they think they understand adoption, many professionals are focused on adoptive parents getting the child of their dreams or maybe on the welfare of a child in need. Finding practical and ethical advice for managing the complex time between a child’s birth and the legal and emotional decision to place that child for adoption is challenging. This webinar will focus on how adoptive parents can navigate their relationship to the first/birth parent(s) and the child while still in the hospital including questions about when to arrive, medical choices, feeding choices, breast feeding, and naming. We will also discuss goodbyes, gifts, and contact after birth.

• Being matched—who’s baby is it?
• Patients in the hospital – baby and birth mom – not adoptive parents
• When to arrive at the hospital
• Who attends the delivery
• Medical choices – questions for the doctor
• Feeding choices – breast feeding
• Naming the baby
• Who takes the baby home
• Gifts
• Contact after birth
