WEBINAR: Transracial Adoption for Parents of Color
Transracial Adoption for Parents of Color
Transracial adoption for parents of color is becoming more common in the adoption community. In contrast to white adoptive parents, people of color understand and have experienced racism first hand, but when parenting transracially they are not necessarily familiar with the specific microaggressions and oppression that those of their child’s race and ethnicity experience. How can parents of color prepare to better understand the –isms their child will face and be ready with tools and steps to support their child? How can they educate themselves on the history and beauty of their child’s race and ethnicity? Hear directly from adoptive families of color parenting across race on the steps they took to prepare themselves for transracial adoption and the continued work they do to support their child’s race and cultural. How can you handle the racial hierarchies and/or historical conflicts between people of the parent’s race/ethnic group(s) and that of their child’s racial/ethnic group?
