 Latinx Adoptee Voices

Hear from adopted adults about their adoption journey including the role their first/birth parents/families have had in their lives and understanding of their own identity. Too often in the adoption field, the adoptee perspective is subordinated to that of the adoptive parent. Pact believes that adults with first-hand experience are the truest experts on that experience. The voices of Latinx adopted adults, born both domestically and internationally, will be featured. They will address issues including language, gendered narratives about Latinx cultures, the importance of ethnic-specific connections, culture-specific approaches to adoption and search (both transnational and domestic).

Educational objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the Latinx movement and what the title means and represents.
  2. Apply first-hand knowledge from Latinx adult adoptees about their adoption and racial identity journey.
  3. For families formed by transracial adoption, list tangible steps adoptive parents can incorporate to support their Latinx child.
  1. Describe some of the common experiences of Latinx adoptees as they navigate their experiences around both race and adoption.
  2. Prepare themselves to answer common questions and concerns that are likely to come up for the Latinx adopted youth in their family and/or community.
  3. Give examples of privilege and how it applies in the context of the adoption of Latinx children.
  4. Identify stereotypes, cultural appropriation and microaggressions as applied to Latinx adoptees.
  5. Create an action plan for supporting Latinx adoptees.
