Adult Program: Adoption, Race and School
with Malaika Parker
Outside of home, children spend more time at school than anywhere else, in an environment that is not always responsive to adopted children of color and their families. This workshop will help parents identify strategies to support adopted children of color in the face of structures that reinforce sometimes problematic assumptions and curriculum. How can you effect change with educators who are not always well-informed about adoption, race, culture, and family diversity, or how to create inclusive curriculum that acknowledges bias and supports difference? How can you get support to address adoption-related and race-related issues within your own family, while at the same time trying to educate your child’s teachers? We will also address choosing schools and developing a real-life strategy for navigating a system that was not designed to meet the needs of most children.
We will then divide into groups to go deeper as follows:
Youth Program: Responding to Questions & Curriculum (children must be at least 5 years old to attend)
In order for children, to learn, benefit from and thrive in any learning environment, they need to feel safe and heard. From class assignments to questions and comments from fellow students, our children face complex and challenging situations at school. Counselors will work with children and youth to review some of these situations and share strategies and solutions to respond, be heard and get the support they need and deserve. Please note: We are unable to provide child care for children under five; no children are allowed into adult programming.
