Anti-Racism & Black Lives Matter: Exploring Allyship to the Black Community

Start time/date: July  16, 2020 4:00 PM
End time/date: July  16, 2020 5:30 PM

Place: Conference Call

Join Raquel Vivanco, Susan DG Leksander and Beth Hall for a support call to discuss our allyship with the Black community and how we can address that within our families and with our children.

Participants in this call (or the 6/24 call) will be offered the opportunity to participate in a second call in late July to explore these issues even more deeply - these calls will be offered to 3 constituencies so they can explore actions and commitments in safe spaces, with the following focus

  1. Non-black people of color (all triad members)
  2. White parents/people parenting and/or mentoring Black children
  3. White parents/people parenting and/or mentoring non-Black children

It is imperative that we talk with our children, in age-appropriate ways, about what's going on in our country. We are too often notoriously reluctant to discuss racism with them and others. This leaves children in confusion and ignorance, and makes children of color feel like their experiences are invalid or taboo.

We will split into breakout groups by racial and adoption demographics according to who registers. We encourage all members of the adoption constellation to join this call, including adoptive & foster parents, first parents and adult adoptees who are people of color (of Asian, Pacific Islander, Latinx, Indigenous, or Native American descent) or white.
