Working with Pre- and Post-Adoptive/Foster Parents of Color:

Insights for Professionals

Outside of their homes, children spend more time at school than anywhere else. Unfortunately, school environments are too often unresponsive to the needs of adopted children and their families. This workshop aims to encourage educators to develop inclusive assignments and supportive school cultures that validate families formed through adoption.

We will help identify strategies to support adopted children in the face of sometimes problematic assumptions and curricula, and focus on societal contexts for adoption, curriculum concerns and developmental frames for how children process adoption.

Participants will be able to…

  • Describe challenges within schools for children who join their family through adoption.
  • Identify opportunities to advocate on behalf of children in their class and/or at school.
  • Create an action plan for adapting school/class curriculum
