African american adopted infant Grief is a normal reaction to a loss. Sometimes it is tempting to focus only on the gains of adoption – and there are many, as children gain new families and people in their lives who love them – but there are also significant losses that include loss of family members, familiar surrounding, control, and sometimes connection to heritage, culture, or race. When losses are addressed and acknowledged, healing is possible. Articles offer advice and insight into the journey of dealing with the grief and loss of adoption.

Pact is nationally recognized for our ethical and child-centered approach to adoption; this includes a commitment to honesty and openness about the losses of adoption and the pain, grief, and anger those losses can generate. For prospective adoptive parents, we offer pre-placement consultations and placement services that take time to explore the challenges as well as the joys that are part of the adoption experience. For prospective birth parents, we offer services that are respectful, non-judgmental, and pressure-free, and acknowledge the loss inherent in making an adoption plan. The emphasis on honest communication continues in our chat groups, our educational workshops and conferences, our nationally acclaimed Pact Family Camp, one-on-one consultations, and regional parent-organized affiliates in Northern California, Southern California, and throughout the U.S. Become a member of Pact to take advantage of all these resources and to receive our newsletter, Pact’s Point of View, which features many articles on confronting and living with loss. Pact members receive a discount at our online bookstore, which features great reads on this topic. We also recommend blogs and other online resources that we believe have the very best advice and information for adoptive families of children of color about adoption, race, and parenting.
